I believe that language shapes reality. How two people choose to communicate with one another plays a great role in how these two people relate to one another. In therapy, I encourage my clients to take responsibility for their thoughts and feelings. Moreover, I teach my clients assertiveness skills. For example, I teach them how to use āIā statements, which reflect the thoughts and feelings of the speaker without trespassing the boundaries of the listener. The channels of communication between two people subsequently open up, rather than close. I also teach my clients communication skills such as active listening, reflective listening, and paraphrasing. When two people know how to communicate effectively, they can then resolve conflicts. Healthy communication and successful conflict resolution leads to greater intimacy, which in turn leads to a more harmonious relationship.
